A poll published today by pressure group Generation Rent found that 59% of the 1,000 people asked backed rent controls.

One in three (34%) had no opinion whilst 6.8% opposed rent controls.

Three quarters of private renters surveyed back controls, as did more than half of homeowners polled. The measure has high backing among Labour and Liberal Democrat supporters, with 69% and 70% respectively in favour. More than half (55%) of Conservative supporters polled are also in favour.

Generation Rent Director Alex Hilton said: ‘By supporting rent control, politicians have an opportunity to do something that will have real, beneficial impact to millions of people while at the same time saving the taxpayer money through the Housing Benefit bill, £9 billion of which goes straight into the pockets of private sector landlords.’

Rent controls are opposed by private landlord bodies, including the Residential Landlords Association, which argues the measure would deter investment in the PRS. The issue is set to be key at the 2015 election, with Labour committing to a national register of private landlords, a ceiling on rent increases and a right to three-year tenancies.

No problem as long as we have the same permitted increases as the courts for possession claims.  There I go dreaming again . . . . Smile

The similarity in this poll and one I did was I asked 100 drunks if they thought the price of alcohol should fixed at 5p a unit? 80% said yes and 20% said nothing to drunk to speak.

What sort of crap poll asks the users and the politicians that support those users if they want the product they use to be capped at a low cost what outcome did they expect. Ask 100 landlords if they want capped rent and see what they say “cough”

Excellent point which leads me to my favourite quote by Aaron Levenstein:-

“Statistics are like a bikini. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital.” Smile

Victor you should ask the same question of 100 people who have been injured by a drunk driver.

Rent controls would bankrupt me and leave me homeless!!

My mortgages could NOT be serviced by controlled rent!!!

I’ll agree to controlled rent if my mortgage costs are reduced to that which can be afforded by rent plus a margin of about 10 % to pay for property costs.

That will never happen!!!
