Citizens Advice reports rise in problems between tenants and letting agents
Citizens Advice has recorded a 14% rise in the number of problems with letting agents, reported by tenants over the last 2 years.
Advising on 6,500 problems with agents between July 2015 and June this year, this is a 14% increase from the 5,700 problems reported two years ago.
The report also reveals that:
- In the last year, 810 problems were reported by 17-24 year olds; compared to 360 complaints made between July 2013 and June 2014,
- Agency fees have risen considerably over recent years, by as much as 60% in some cases.

Housing association Genesis also surveyed 17 London letting agents and online agencies and found that:
- the average tenant would pay £436 in up-front fees; covering reference, guarantor checks, inventory and contract fees.
- Looking at ‘end of tenancy’ fees, the average agency was found to be charging £130; covering an inventory check-out and future landlord references.
