Are your tenants invalidating their home insurance and putting your property at risk?

Are you aware that millions of households across Britain could be invalidating their home insurance if they own a tumble dryer?

Whirlpool, who own the Indesit, Hotpoint and Creda brands, are currently in the process of repairing or replacing 4.3 million potentially faulty machines after letters went out warning owners that their dryers could burst into flames at any moment!

Potentially fatal if excess fluff catches the heating element, Whirpool have instructed customers to use the faulty machines as usual under the condition that they don’t leave them unattended and to check and clean the filter after each cycle. However with dozens of household fires now being linked to tumble dryers across the country, safety experts have warned against using affected tumble dryers all together.

So with conflicting advice from both parties, there is a real growing concern amongst Whirpool customers regarding the validity of their home insurance policies if they continue to use these machines. But the problem is that customers are currently waiting up to 11 months for an engineer to visit them, so many are now stuck between a rock and a hard place!

Martyn Allen of Electrical Safety First said: “We urge the public not to use any affected appliance at all until it has been inspected and declared safe by the manufacturer’s engineer.”

So are your tenants putting your property at risk?

  1. Firstly ask them to look out for a green sticker, either on the inside of the door or the back of the machine, as this will mean that it’s  unaffected and therefore safe to use.
  2. If their machine was bought between April 2004 and October 2015 your tenants should check whether their machine is faulty by entering the serial code and model (found on the back of the dryer) into the online check at: safety.hotpoint.eu or safety.indesit.eu immediately.
  3. If your tenants machine is more than 12 months old they can opt to pay up to £99 for a replacement machine.
