"The road to hell is paved with constant economic growth" is certainly a euphemism for the present state of the economy.
With the continual booms and busts throughout the decades you have to ask the question WHAT IS THE ANSWER TO THIS?
Whilst the labour government controlled the economy and kept it stable for far longer than previous governments, when the crash came it was alot worse than previously due to the world recession.
Of course this cannot be blamed solely on one government in this country, it is a continual reminder of what happens to a world governed by capitalism.
If you read between the lines the forecast for most of the world looks grim for the forseeable future, with riots breaking out in many countries (including our own) the road to hell is surely upon us.
Looking at the present cuts and the government initiating curfew measures designed as "reducing the carbon footprint" etc, it shows an undercurrent of unrest and hidden restrictive practices being instilled in an underhand manner.
And as there doesn't appear to be an answer to the present economic collapse you have to wonder whether world war is just around the corner?"
Extracted from Chekov, or was it Brave New World by Aldous Huxley?
I read this out at a North Somerset U3A meeting this morning.
This was clearly satire relating to Spitting Image (1970's) but I don't think they got it!
I hope you all do!
Hi GFP,
I am not convinced that the Labour Governments economy stability was any thing other than keeping a lid on the boiling pot by borrowing more and more. Once the world economy started to falter they had no where to go other than to show their hand and in that hand were not the loaves of bread they should have baked for the future, but the crumbs that were left from feeding others on borrowed bread from the past.
We certainly live in uncertain times and I agree the world is uneasy with greed and jealousy for what others have. Well! maybe world war 3 is on its way..but not to worry all the politicaians will live on because the only bit they will get from the bomb blast is a burnt arse as it shoots past them while they have their heads buried in the sand ha ha

I think you'll find that the riots were caused by the criminal classes who saw how thin the veneer of normal policing was and took to outright unfettered criminality.
The emperor was for a short period recognised as having NO clothes.
This was eventually restored by a massive unsustainable economically speaking, level of policing.
Order was restored; but showed how reduction of police is not a good idea.
It only takes a few criminals from the criminal classes [This sentence was removed by an LRS moderator because it didn't abide by our community standards] to cause massive economic damage to retailers who purvey the more desirable consumer items favoured by these criminal types; trainers, casual branded sprortswear, mobile phones. high end electronic goods, booze and fags.
Nobody raided a book shop, probably because most of the criminals couldn't read anyway.
Most of the criminals are involved in drug dealing and other gang related criminal activity.
The riots had NOTHING to do with a level of political consciousness by these criminals.
None of them have probably ever voted in their lives.
They have never had a political thought ever enter their heads.
They seemed to have some objection to the police harassing them; well that is because at least 75% of them were criminals.
What do you expect the police to do ignore the fact they are known criminals.
Best way to stop being stopped and searched by the police is stop being a criminal, simples!
There will be no economic collapse.
The biggest issue the world has is that too many people are being produced and not enough are dying.
Medical advances are keeping the population levels higher than are sustainable and this is putting unsustainable pressure on the world's resources.
Basically women are going to have to take control of their reproductive capacity, a situation which many are prevented from doing because of expense of contraception or refusal of men to participate in such family planning measures.
Why is it in Africa the poor starving mothers always seem to have about 5 children.
This is the principle cause of the world's problems; not capitalism per se.
We need a few wars and pandemics to cut down on the world population particularly in the poorer regions of the world.
Religion also has a lot to answer for in not promoting responsible reproduction.
The UK has a particuar problem in that being an island there is only so much space to provide for the population.
More resources are required for which we have to pay for and we can't afford it without massive borrowings which is not sustainable.
We need to stop immigration immediately and operate an Australian points system for immigration into the UK.
In fact as world citizens I think adoption of the Chinese strategy of no more than 2 children per female should be adopted.
This would massively assist the world economic situation as far as pressure on world resources are concerned.
It would be the responsible thing to do and would increase life chances for the reduced population, just like happened after the Black Death occurred!
