Tenant set housemate on fire for throwing out meatballs

A tenant set her housemate on fire after a spat over some missing meatballs.

Food glorious food- it can bring out the primal side in the best of us. However, lighting a housemate on fire for throwing out a handful of meatballs seems a little over the top.

33-year-old Melissa Dawn Sellers returned home after a night of drinking at around 2.30am. She soon realised that her house mate, 42-year-old Carlos Ortiz had thrown away her meal.

Her response was to douse Mr Ortiz with nail varnish remover and set him on fire.

A friend of Mr Ortiz, Ines Causevic, who was present at the time of the incident, immediately threw water over him and tried to put out the blaze with his shirt.

‘When he got up his face looked like it was melting off, it was pink and sore. His lips were burning,’ Causevic said.

Mr Ortiz was then rushed to hospital where doctors say he is in a critical condition with burns to is face, chest and shoulders.

Ms Sellers fled the scene shortly after the incident but later returned to her step-father’s house nearby. She was then arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Neighbours said that Mr Ortiz was letting the girls stay in his property as she was evicted from her last property.
