Everything You Need To Know About South Gloucestershire’s ‘Self Build Register’

For many, building their own home could be a lifelong dream that they never get to fulfil. But, for those living in South Gloucestershire, that dream could become a reality much sooner than expected…

Due to the fact it is so hard for the youth of today to get on to the property ladder, people in their twenties and thirties are becoming known as ‘generation rent’. A new survey has shown that many will rely on inheritance and gifts in order to step their foot onto the bottom rung of the property ladder, as rising prices have made properties affordable.

But, what is the solution? When the costs are so extortionate before you even start paying for the house itself and despite schemes by the government, such as ‘Help to buy,’ many are still struggling.

Well, it looks like the answer could be in and around Bristol.

Residents across South Gloucestershire are being encouraged to consider building their own home as part of another new government scheme to start getting more people on the property ladder.

South Gloucestershire Council is one of many local authorities across the UK pioneering the innovative Self Build Register.

So, what do you need to do if you want to build your own property? It couldn’t be simpler – all you need to do is sign up to the register and the authority will contact you when a suitable plot becomes available.

The scheme isn’t just for individuals – it is also available for community self-build project, so a group can buy the land and develop it, either by themselves or with contractors.

The idea is to match those with an interest in starting a self-build project with landowners who have a suitable plot of land. These will, however, still need a formal planning application and will be subject to relevant policies.

Housing prices in Bristol are rising faster than London – so building your own property may be the most cost effective way to get on the housing ladder.

If you are interested in building your own home, after you have signed up to the Self Build Register, you may want to start thinking about what you can do in the meantime, in preparation.
