Citizens Advice reports rise in problems between tenants and letting agents

Citizens Advice has recorded a 14% rise in the number of problems with letting agents, reported by tenants over the last 2 years.

Advising on 6,500 problems with agents between July 2015 and June this year, this is a 14% increase from the 5,700 problems reported two years ago.

The report also reveals that:

  • In the last year, 810 problems were reported by 17-24 year olds; compared to 360 complaints made between July 2013 and June 2014,
  • Agency fees have risen considerably over recent years, by as much as 60% in some cases.

This coincides with the latest news that ‘All letting fees should be covered by landlords say Citizens Advice …’ (click to read the discussion in full)

Housing association Genesis also surveyed 17 London letting agents and online agencies and found that:

  • the average tenant would pay £436 in up-front fees; covering reference, guarantor checks, inventory and contract fees.
  • Looking at ‘end of tenancy’ fees, the average agency was found to be charging £130; covering an inventory check-out and future landlord references.

So the question is: can you trust your letting agent?

Your buy to let property is your one of your most important assets, if not THE most important, so you need to be able to fully trust in your agent right from the start.

At Tenant Referencing UK we fight for landlords rights all the time, striving to create the best products at the best price to help our member landlords meet their costs as well as their legal obligations. A prime example of this was at the beginning of the year, where we set a precedent when an agent who was an ARLA member ended up with a CCJ and compensation claim. Which is why more and more landlords, who are looking to give their tenants the best deal and in preparation for when they can’t charge them anything, are joining LandlordReferencing.co.uk for all their Referencing & Insurance needs.
