5 Moving House Tips to Help Keep You Sane
The boxing up of everything you own when you move house can be the source of all kinds of arguments and stresses!
What to keep? What to throw? What order to do things in?
Moving your entire life out of one property into another is the culmination of an often long-winded process. If things haven’t gone entirely to plan you can be left with very stressed people trying to coordinate a large-scale packing operation, which isn’t always a good idea!
Anwyl Homes have sent us their top house removal tips guide, which will help you sail through the process and keep any stress to a minimum!
Buy biggest boxes you can – and make sure they’re strong!
Let’s start with the basics. Too often people try to pick up old boxes from supermarkets etc, cobbling together whatever they can. This is a risky strategy for a number of reasons…
- You have no control over the size of boxes.
- No control over the number of boxes.
- The quality of the boxes may be questionable.
If you rely on old, second hand boxes they may have been damaged, stretched out of shape and may have been wet in the past, making them weaker. You can’t afford to risk dodgy boxes when you’re carrying your valued personal possessions in them.
The best advice on the boxes front is to buy big, strong and high quality boxes. You can pick them up on Amazon and select the number and quality that you need. You’ll be glad you did.
Keep Rooms Together
You’d think this would be common sense, but it’s not always followed.
Draw up a list of rooms you need to pack up and if you can, write down the major items. With your big, strong boxes from the first tip you’ll be able to pack entire rooms into just a few boxes, keeping everything together.
Make sure the boxes are clearly marked, so you know what is in them and also which room to put them into in the new house. If you have anyone helping you with the move, it’s also really handy for them so they know where to put each box in the new house.
By following this tip you’ll know exactly what goes where and you will save a lot of time at the other end when it comes to unpacking your entire belongings.
Make sure it’s protected.
When you are loading all of your belongings into boxes, go to extra lengths to make sure all of your valuable and fragile items are well protected in their boxes. Remember boxes in the back of van’s are likely to move around and the contents of them may be damaged in the process.
To protect items, wrappings such as bubble wrap, fabrics, newspaper etc are ideal. Of course it goes without saying that the higher value the item, the more careful and protective you have to wrap it!
If there’s one thing more stressful than packing up, it has to be opening boxes to reveal everything is smashed.
Only pack what you need.
Moving house is the very best chance you have to de-clutter. When you are deciding what to pack, as yourself are you moving something because you need it, or because you have it?
Are there toys the kids have grown out of? Are there garden tools you won’t need any more? Furniture that just won’t fit in the new place? Take a good look at your belongings and don’t be afraid to throw away anything you don’t want or need any more.
You can even sell some of your stuff and make a little bit of money in the process!
Give yourself plenty of time.
None of the house moving process comes as a surprise, so you have plenty of time to plan. If you leave packing your entire life into boxes until the last minute, you’ve given yourself a lot more work than you needed to!
Start with the things you certainly won’t need soon. Get them boxed up and stored ready. A garage is a good place to start because it doesn’t affect your life much. If you can combine early packing with a good de-cluttering session, you’ll save yourself a whole load of work!
After that move onto clothes and shoes – pack things you won’t be wearing for a while.
If you follow a step-by-step approach, you’ll have done a lot of the work ahead of time so when it comes to moving day, you’ll have much less to do!
