32,000 benefit tenants Christmas ruined by DWP

Jobcentre_2013_1Up to 32,000 benefit claimants did not receive their payments in time for Christmas, due to an “administrative error”.

Those claiming jobseekers allowance, employment support allowance, social fund (essential for things such as clothes, rent and furniture) and certain categories of pension social fund where due their benefit money on Christmas Eve but for many it did not arrive into their accounts until Friday 27th – and at LRS we are still hearing from landlords who’s tenants have still not been paid.

The DWP said that if individuals had contacted them before 5pm on Tuesday 24th their payment would have been rushed through within three hours.

A spokesman said: “The vast majority of regular benefit payments have been made on time this Christmas.

“However due to an administrative issue, a number of one-off or more irregular payments will now be paid on December 27 rather than December 24.

“We have procedures in place to ensure that anyone who has been affected by this and who contacted us would have had their benefits paid, usually within three hours.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Jobcentre_2013From the look of the photo’s a landlord in Weston-super-Mare kindly sent in to us it doesn’t look like tenants in the seaside town accepted the DWP’s apology…!!!

  • Are your tenants now in arrears because of this very merry DWP error?
  • Were YOU affected by this?

Whatever your views are please share them with the LRS community.
